What musicians are saying

From students to seasoned performers.

I uploaded a Chopin nocturne that had been sitting in a drawer for years. Within seconds I had a fully playable score — transposed to my key. Absolutely magical.

Clara M.

As a piano teacher I send PDFs home with students all the time. Now they can actually hear what the piece should sound like before the next lesson. Game changer.

James O.

Accuracy is impressive for printed scores. Handwritten lead sheets are hit or miss, but the inline editor makes quick corrections painless.

Priya S.

The drag-to-edit feature alone is worth it. I corrected a misread accidental in two seconds flat — no re-upload needed.

Tom R.

I run a community choir and we get new arrangements weekly. Stave cuts my prep time in half. The PDF export with the original pages is a lovely touch.

Aiko F.

Really polished product. Would love support for guitar tablature down the road, but for standard notation it is the best tool I have found.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Stave.

Stave is an AI-powered sheet music reader. Upload a PDF of printed or scanned sheet music and in seconds you'll have an interactive score — complete with playback, transposition, and editing tools — without installing any software.

Stave accepts PDF files. Up to the first four pages are analysed per upload. For longer scores you can split the PDF into sections and upload each part separately.

Each PDF page is converted to a high-resolution image and sent to a vision AI model. The model reads the clef, key signature, time signature, note pitches, rhythms, chord symbols, and lyrics, then returns structured data that is converted into standard ABC notation for rendering and playback.

Accuracy is highest for clean, high-contrast printed scores in common notation. Handwritten music, unusual clef combinations, or heavily marked parts may contain errors. You can correct any mistake directly — by dragging notes, clicking header text, or editing the ABC notation in the built-in editor.

Yes. Drag any note up or down to change its pitch, click title or tempo text to edit it inline, use the key selector to transpose the entire piece, adjust BPM with the tempo badge, or edit the underlying ABC notation directly in the text editor.

Stave can play the full score, treble clef only, bass clef only, chord symbols only, or treble with chords. A built-in metronome, zoom controls, and a piano keyboard that lights up with active notes are also included.

Yes. The "Generate PDF" button creates a PDF with the rendered notation on the first page followed by your original scanned pages — useful for printing or archiving a cleaned-up version.

The Free plan lets anyone try the app with no sign-up — the first 12 measures of each upload are shown. Starter (sign-in required) gives 5 full uploads per week. Pro unlocks unlimited uploads, key transposition, and all playback modes. Max adds jazz reharmonisation, advanced editing, and priority processing.

PDF pages are sent to the AI model for processing but are not stored permanently. The extracted notation lives in your browser session. Export a PDF if you want to keep a copy of your work.

Stave works in any modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop and mobile. Audio playback requires a user gesture to start (a browser security requirement). For the best mobile experience, add Stave to your home screen to run it as a standalone app.
